Leadership Opportunities for School Support Staff 

Additional Adult Assistant to Paraeducator

This career pathway course is designed to prepare Additional Adult Assistants to successfully complete the ParaPro Assessment and pursue a career as a Paraeducator in BCPS.  “The ParaPro Assessment measures the ability of paraeducators to use reading, writing, and math skills when assisting in the classroom. Certification requirements for teaching assistants were established as part of the No Child Left Behind Act and the Every Student Succeeds Act.”  Upon successful completion of the course and exam, AAs will have the opportunity to apply and serve in the role of a Para.


Leadership Opportunities for Teachers

The Aspiring Assistant Principals Course

The Office of Teacher Development organizes workshops, events, courses and programs for all teachers to support professional growth and to earn credits needed for recertification, salary advancement, or additional endorsements.

The Aspiring Assistant Principals Course

The Office of Teacher Leadership is offering Teacher Leader University (TLU), a variety of continuing professional development (CPD) credit options and programs, with the goal of supporting teachers in developing leadership skills. BCPS staff should utilize the online registration system to register for TLU courses.

The Community Schools Facilitator

The Community School Facilitator works with staff, students, families, and community organizations to foster a school environment that is welcoming to families, inclusive of the necessary community resources, respects and honors student, family, and community diversity, and draws upon family and community resources to enhance wrap around supports that support overall student success.

Consulting Teacher

The primary function of a Consulting Teacher is to provide the consistent support necessary to develop skilled teachers that positively influence student learning. Consulting Teachers observe classroom performance, facilitate reflective conversations with teachers assigned to their caseload, and build the teachers’ knowledge base and repertoire of teaching skills. They focus on equitable teaching practices and evidence of student learning to drive coaching conversations with client teachers.

The Department Chair Course

The Department of Teaching and Learning and the Office of Teacher Leadership offer professional development opportunities to acting and prospective department chairs. The course will develop foundational skills required to do the work of a teacher leader; develop a clear understanding of the role of the department chair; and prepare candidates for the department chair pool application and interview process.

Leadership Opportunities for Teacher Leaders

The Aspiring Assistant Principals Course

This course will focus on the knowledge and skill development necessary to fulfill the role of an Assistant Principal. Participants will have required readings to grow and develop their school-based leadership skills. Successful completion of this course will provide participants with the core knowledge and skills necessary to maximize their roles as school-based leaders.

 


Leadership Opportunities for School Administrators

The School Leaders Licensure Assessment Course

The Department of Organizational Development and Leadership offers a series of four two-hour preparatory sessions for a study group of assistant principals, teachers, and/or C&I staff who are planning to take the electronic School Leaders Licensure Assessment 6990 (SLLA). The SLLA certificate is required for the role of principal.

The Principal Internship Program Course

In order to build a pipeline into the principalship, a professional learning pathway for Assistant Principals, The Principal Internship, has been designed for the 2023-2024 school year. This professional learning pathway is a blend of coursework, opportunities to provide professional learning, and an internship.

 


Professional Leadership Opportunities

The Aspire CourseThe goal of ASPIRE BCPS is to provide a variety of professional development experiences that build the personal and professional skills, abilities, and leadership capacity of staff members seeking growth, change or career advancement within BCPS. Participation in ASPIRE BCPS is open to non-represented staff and staff members represented by AFSCME, ESPBC, and OPE. CASE members seeking Central Office positions may also participate.
