Leadership Development for Prospective Department Chairs

The Division of Curriculum and Instruction and the Office of Teacher Leadership offer professional development opportunities to acting and prospective department chairs.  Prospective department chairs are expert teachers in their content areas who are interested in growing as teacher leaders.

The purposes of these professional development opportunities are to:

    • Develop foundational skills required to do the work of a teacher leader,
    • Develop a clear understanding of the role of the department chair, and
    • Prepare candidates for the department chair pool application and interview process.
  •
  •  The following professional development opportunities are prerequisites to applying for the department chair pool:
  •
  •  Office of Teacher Leadership Division of Curriculum and Instruction
The Office of Teacher Leadership offers a one-credit MSDE CPD course for all aspiring teacher leaders titled “The Fundamentals of Teacher Leadership.” This course covers topics and skills applicable to any teacher leader role, including the role of the department chair (DC).

The Division of Curriculum and Instruction offers information and development sessions for prospective department chairs. These 90-minute sessions provide an opportunity to develop skills related to the roles and responsibilities of the DC as well as information regarding the application process.

*Acting department chairs do not need to attend these information sessions as the content will be covered through DC professional development and new DC support provided by each content area.
