The Department of Special Education Compliance Team seeks to close the achievement gap for students who are receiving special education and related services. The Compliance Team supports BCPS in the area of understanding and implementing the legal requirements of special education by providing central office and school-based staff with ongoing professional development (PD). The focus of the PD is to ensure BCPS students receive appropriate supports and services as identified on their individualized education program (IEP) based on federal (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act [IDEA]) and state (Code of Maryland Regulations [COMAR]) guidelines.
In addition, the Compliance Team investigates special education concerns and/or complaints from parents/guardians through resolutions, mediations, and due process hearings. Additionally, the Compliance Team investigates all inquiries form the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), and assists with student specific and systemic corrective actions. Lastly, in collaboration with the BCPS Law Office, the Compliance Team develops and reviews policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all state and federal statutes and regulations.
