Mathematics 7 Content

The Baltimore County Public Schools Mathematics 7 program is designed so that each student has access to rigorous instruction, uses problem solving to examine the world around them, and engages in the habits of mind of proficient mathematical thinkers.

In Mathematics 7, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

Proficient Mathematical Thinkers

  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  • Model with mathematics.
  • Use appropriate tools strategically.
  • Attend to precision.
  • Look for and make use of structure.
  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Mathematics 7 Curriculum

Teaching Cycle

Mathematics 7 students use the Illustrative Mathematics text, which is designed to spark discussion, perseverance, and the enjoyment of mathematics. Students learn through a problem-based learning cycle. You can read more about the design principles and supports provided for Illustrative Mathematics in their Information for Families (En Español).
