November 23, 2021 Community Update: The Gift of Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving

THE GIFT OF THANKSGIVING

As the holidays approach, many members of the BCPS community will have the opportunity to connect with family and friends. We know that the holiday season can be stressful and we want to encourage you to use this time to embrace social and emotional wellness practices.

Enjoy The Moment

As we reconnect and experience the hustle and bustle of the holidays, please remember to:

  • Delight in being with family and friends.
  • Take a moment to enjoy the change of seasons.
  • Be mindful of the sounds of laughter and chatter as you celebrate this special time.
  • Enjoy your family/community traditions.

Keep in mind that we all have something to offer to each other this holiday season.

When you are looking for opportunities to explore and expand, use the Social-Emotional Learning calendars (elementary, middle and high, adult) for activities during this time and make sure to use the Virtual Calming Room to place the mindful moment or pause in your day when your body and mind need a break.

Navigating the Holiday Season

The holidays can be a source of joy and excitement for many people, but for some, it can be a time of sadness and stress. Whatever feelings you have they can be overwhelming. Please know that whatever you are feeling—it is okay to have those feelings.

There are strategies to make these stressors more manageable. Here are some tips for navigating the holidays and taking care of your mental health and wellness:

  • Acknowledge your feelings.
  • Spend time with positive and supportive people.
  • Perform an act of kindness.
  • Take a walk (weather permitting).
  • Consider what/who you are thankful for.
  • Say "no" to commitments that are unnecessary.
  • Do something for yourself that helps you feel recharged or that you enjoy.
  • Get some rest!
  • Reach out for support if needed

COVID-19 Reminders

COVID remains a threat this Thanksgiving as rates continue to rise steadily across the state and country. Please consider getting your COVID-19 vaccine to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus.  If you were vaccinated before May 2021, please consider getting a booster dose. Vaccines remain the single most effective way to prevent COVID-19 infection and serious disease.

When gathering with family and friends in homes please keep the following in mind:

  • Increase ventilation by opening doors and windows.
  • If possible, gather outside.
  • Encourage good hygiene practices like washing your hands frequently.
  • Cover your mouth when coughing.
  • Most importantly if you have COVID-19 symptoms stay home and get tested.

Social Media Threats
SEE SOMETHING – SAY SOMETHING

Over the last few months BCPS has seen an increase in the number of threats and inappropriate messages that have been posted on social media by our students. Parents/guardians, we need your help. Please monitor your children’s use of social media to ensure that they are making responsible decisions. Inappropriate and threatening use of social media, especially when directed at students or schools, may result in disciplinary consequences and potential legal action.

Please remind students that if they see something suspicious or concerning on social media, they should report it to a trusted adult immediately.

Have a happy Thanksgiving!
