AVID's MISSION IN BCPS IS TO

Close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society by expanding access to and support in college and career pathways including AP, IB, dual enrollment, and CTE.

AVID IN BCPS

BCPS and AVID have worked in partnership for over 20 years to advance the college and career readiness of all students in BCPS and AVID is currently implemented in 61 schools, in grades K-12.  AVID trained elementary educators and AVID Elective teachers in middle and high school serve over 7,00 students in BCPS!

While AVID has a long history in BCPS, it was a movement started in one teacher's classroom in 1980 and has grown to a community of educators, students, and families throughout the country, where AVID serves over 2 million students in 46 states!

AVID ELEMENTARY

AVID is implemented in 17 BCPS Elementary Schools, where students learn organizational skills, note-taking methods, and how to interact with course material by posing high-level questions in preparation for rigorous course enrollment in middle school and beyond.

AVID IN MIDDLE SCHOOL

AVID is implemented in 23 BCPS middle schools which implement AVID schoolwide, as described in the AVID Elementary model, and also offer an AVID elective class that provides additional support for students achieving average grades with a determination to advance to more rigorous courses, with the support of the AVID Elective class, in order to pursue a four-year college degree.

AVID IN HIGH SCHOOL

AVID is implemented in 21 BCPS high schools in which students, schoolwide, benefit from best practices around instruction, access, and support for rigorous course enrollment and AVID Elective students work collaboratively with their peers to explore college and career opportunities, discuss points of confusion they have in other classes, and receive support in the college application process.

In 2023, 490 BCPS AVID graduating seniors earned $70 MILLION in scholarship and grant offers!

AVID SUPPORT & COMMITMENT

Every BCPS AVID School has an AVID Site Coordinator who collaborates with other AVID Site Coordinators in their feeder-pattern to assure continuity of practice and a shared vision of college and career readiness for all students, and additional supports for AVID Elective students, including advocating for advancement into more rigorous courses, appropriate to the student, to support college and career goals.

Once an AVID student enrolls in the AVID elective, the expectation is that they will continue in AVID in order to get the full benefits of the AVID system and the AVID Elective class.  AVID Elective teachers provide personalized support for their students and their families as they traverse the terrain of post-high school options, including college application and resume development, financial aid assistance and planning, and increasing the core skills colleges look for in students through WICOR: Writing to learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading to learn using critical thinking skills.
