7th ANNUAL COMPOSITION PROJECT

“INFINITE POSSIBILITIES”

The Baltimore County Public School BCPS Composition Project supports music educators by incorporating National Core Music Standards and Maryland State Music Standards in classrooms. As such, the Composition Project is designed to encourage and enhance instructional experiences of BCPS students and music educators by providing professional critiques, enhanced recognition, and selected presentations for ongoing creative work of students in BCPS.

DESCRIPTION: Students in all BCPS schools are encouraged to submit a composition to the Office of Performing Arts incorporating the theme INFINITE POSSIBILITIES.  Works will be reviewed by a panel and outstanding compositions in Elementary, Middle, and High School will have various opportunities for works to be recognized.  Students are also encouraged to submit their compositions used for the BCPS Composition Project to the Maryland Music Educators Association Young Composers Project in the spring.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all BCPS students PreK-12 who are enrolled in a music class at school.

DESCRIPTION OF CREATIVE WORK:

  • Compositions should be composed by individual students.
  • May be an original arrangement of public domain works.
  •  Duration must not exceed five (5) minutes.
  •  May be written for a solo, small, or large ensemble.
  •  Presentation may be for an electronic, instrumental, or vocal medium.\Must reflect Anchor Standards 1, 2, & 3 from the National or State Music Standards.  Works not addressing these standards will not be accepted.

SUBMITTING CREATIVE WORK: Each work is teacher submitted through online platform 

  • Must include scores or Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) screenshots with a title. 
  • All measures must be numbered.
  • Must include a Composer’s Statement (secondary) or Storyboard (elementary).
  • Student names should not appear on the scores; only the title of the composition.
  • Only the title of the composition appears on the MP3 file.
  • All creative rights belong to the composer.
  • Teachers can upload between December 4, 2023 through April 19, 2024.
