WBL Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Work-Based Learning Programs

  • Students
    • Collaborate with the business mentor and WBL coordinator to develop the learning plan.
    • Maintain open communication with the WBL coordinator and business mentor.
    • Develop academic, occupational, and employability skills.
    • Adapt to the worksite culture.
    • Adhere to the Student-Parent-School Agreement.
    • Adhere to school and workplace policies and procedures.
    • Maintain a journal/log of the work experience.
    • Report number of work hours.
    • Establish and maintain a portfolio.
  • Parent
    • Follow the components of the Student-Parent-School Agreement.
    • Adhere to Work-Based Learning Agreement.
    • Allow the WBL coordinator to deal with all issues related to the worksite.
    • Maintain contact with the WBL coordinator (either through telephone or email).
    • Participate in the career exploration and development process.
  • Employer
    • Communicate with the work-based learning (WBL) coordinator regarding  concerns, performance, and evaluations.
    • Provide realistic work expectations for the student.
    • Provide an orientation program for the work-based student at the job site.
    • Instruct the student in company safety and health procedures and policies.
    • Model effective ethical behavior on the job site.
    • Encourage the student to work as a team player.
    • Provide a minimum 10-hour per week schedule and monitor student attendance.
    • Assess student workplace competencies and provide feedback.
    • Increase student responsibilities based on job performance.
    • Promote student understanding of the relationship between rigorous, relevant education and employment success.
  • School
    • Provide administrative leadership and support.
    • Provide flexible scheduling.
    • Provide thorough planning.
  • Teacher Coordinator
    • Provide preparatory activities for the experience.
    • Coordinate the development of student learning plans.
    • Provide resources and expertise in portfolio development.
    • Include real-world applications in instruction.
