Physical Education

Justin O'Brien, Coordinator

The purpose of the physical education program is to contribute to each student’s growth and development in the physical, mental, and social domains through a movement-based curriculum.  This involves the delivery of a planned, sequential, K-12 instructional program that teaches skills, knowledge, and behaviors to promote lifelong fitness.  These components are necessary to function at an adequate level of competence, enabling each student to be an active, physically and mentally fit individual throughout life.

Vision

Baltimore County Public Schools students will have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue a lifetime of healthful physical activity and exercise.

Philosophy

Physical education is a vital part of a well-rounded education that teaches the whole child through instruction in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. The comprehensive physical education program provides students with a variety of culturally relevant and meaningful experiences to understand the implications and benefits of physical activity.

Mission

The Office of Health and Physical Education’s mission is to support and advocate for sequential and developmentally appropriate high quality physical education programs that empower all students to value physical activity and become physically literate for a lifetime. Physically literate students (1) develop the motivation and ability to understand, communicate, apply, and analyze various forms of movement, (2) demonstrate a variety of movements competently and confidently across a wide range of physical activities, (3) make healthy active choices that are both beneficial too and respectful of their selves, others, and their environment.

Belief Statements

We believe that all students will be successful in a safe, supportive, and orderly learning environment.

Our vision for physically literate students requires:

  • Equitable access to a high-quality instructional program for all students.
  • Culturally aware curriculum based on the National and State Standards for Physical Education.
  • Rigorous instructional activities that reflect high expectations for all students.
  • Instruction delivered by certified physical education teachers that is responsive to all student’s strengths and needs.
  • Scheduling that supports sequential instruction and adequate time, sufficient staffing, appropriate facilities, and proper equipment to deliver high-quality physical education.
  • Empowering stakeholders (students, teachers, administrators, community leaders, and parents) with a shared responsibility for supporting high-quality physical education programs.
