Algebra 2 Content

The Baltimore County Public Schools Algebra 2 program is designed so that each student has access to rigorous instruction, uses problem solving to examine the world around them, and engages in the habits of mind of proficient mathematical thinkers.

In Algebra 2, instructional time focuses on (1) studying the structure of polynomial and rational functions through graphs and expressions, using different forms to identify asymptotes and end behaviors; (2) extending exponent rules to include rational exponents, while extending the number system to include complex numbers, ultimately combining work with rational exponents and exponential functions to introduce the concepts of the number e and logarithms; (3) transforming functions graphically and algebraically, applying transformations to previously studied function families (linear, quadratic, exponential, and piecewise) as well as periodic functions; and (4) analyzing data from experiments using normal distribution, estimating population mean, margin of error, and proportions using sampling and simulations.

Proficient Mathematical Thinkers

  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

  • Model with mathematics.

  • Use appropriate tools strategically.

  • Attend to precision.

  • Look for and make use of structure.

  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Algebra 2 Curriculum

Problem Based Teaching Cycle

Algebra 2 students use the Illustrative Mathematics text, which is designed to spark discussion, perseverance, and the enjoyment of mathematics. Students learn through a problem-based learning cycle. You can read more about the design principles and supports provided for Illustrative Mathematics in their Information for Families.
