Algebra 1 Content

The Baltimore County Public Schools Algebra 1 program is designed so that each student has access to rigorous instruction, uses problem solving to examine the world around them, and engages in the habits of mind of proficient mathematical thinkers.

In Algebra 1 instructional time focuses on (1) expanding understanding of linear equations, inequalities, and systems of linear equations and inequalities, applying to scatter plots and lines of best fit, (2) deepening understanding of functions including notation, average rate of change, domain and range, specifically for linear, quadratic, exponential, and piecewise functions; (3) writing, transforming, graphing, and solving quadratic equations by reasoning, rearranging equations into useful forms and applying the quadratic formula; and (4) expanding statistical tools to interpret data including standard deviation, interquartile range, categorical data, and scatter plots.

Proficient Mathematical Thinkers

  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

  • Model with mathematics.

  • Use appropriate tools strategically.

  • Attend to precision.

  • Look for and make use of structure.

  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Algebra 1 Curriculum

Teaching Cycle

Algebra 1 students use the Illustrative Mathematics text, which is designed to spark discussion, perseverance, and the enjoyment of mathematics. Students learn through a problem-based learning cycle. You can read more about the design principles and supports provided for Illustrative Mathematics in their Information for Families.
