Online Courses

The Office of Educational Options supports schools by providing high quality learning options for students to access middle and high school courses outside of current school offerings, schedules and locations.

2016 – 2017 MSDE and BCPS Approved Online Courses

Credit toward a Maryland high school diploma can only be awarded for MSDE-approved online courses (COMAR 13A.03.02.05D (1). An online course is one that is provided by internet and other technologies in which 80% or more of instruction is conducted online with the teacher and student separated by distance or time or both and in which two-way communication between the teacher and student is required.

Students can access online courses to:

  1. Expand their range of courses and opportunities.
  2. Take a course when there are too few students in the school to assign a teacher to teach that course.
  3. Accommodate schedules that prevent them from taking a course when it is offered.

While enrolled in an online class:

  • Students interact with the teacher, their classmates, and instructional materials using a computer and the Internet.
  • Students are expected to work independently through learning activities and seek help from the online teacher when needed.Students can complete work during their scheduled time. Advanced courses will require additional work after school hours.
  • Students are assigned a school-based coach to assist them in keeping up with assignments and accessing resources to communicate with the online teacher and submit assignments. Coaches will communicate with students at least once a week.
  • The online teacher and student communicate through online course tools such as email, messaging, telephone, discussions, and webinars.
  • Students are expected to complete assignments by the time assigned by the teacher. Late assignments could affect quarterly report card grades.
  • Student progress and grades are determined by students' demonstrated understanding through independent assignments and assessments.
