Magnet Middle Program Scoring Guidelines

Admission criteria have been established for middle school magnet programs as a means of ensuring student success.  In order to qualify for admission into a middle school magnet program, applicants must earn at least 70% of the assessment criteria points.  Only qualified applicants can be considered for placement.
Admission Criteria (100 points):

  • Academic Review (40 Points) – four quarters/three trimesters from the previous year's report card and the first quarter/trimester from the current year's report card are reviewed in each of five academic areas: Reading, Writing/Language Usage, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science.
    • Grades (20 Points) – Every quarter (or trimester) grade of D or E in any of the aforementioned academic areas results in the deduction of 3 points from the 20 possible points.  No more than 20 points will be deducted for this assessment criterion.
    • Performance Factors (20 Points) – Every "Effort" grade indicating less than "satisfactory" performance in any of the aforementioned academic areas results in the deduction of 2 points from the 20 possible points.  No more than 20 points will be deducted for this assessment criterion.

  • Magnet Assessments (60 Points) – most middle school magnet programs require an on-site assessment.  Failure to attend and complete an assessment will disqualify the applicant for that magnet program.

Appropriate testing accommodations, as documented in the student's active educational plan (i.e. IEP, 504, ELL/RELL, etc.), will be provided during the assessment(s).

    • Writing Sample (10 Points)
Applicants will respond to a writing prompt when they attend the magnet assessment at the magnet school for which admission is being sought.  The applicant's essay will be scored using a standard rubric.
    • Program Assessments (50 Points)
The assessments are specific to each program and may include a written test, audition, or other performance-based evaluation.  The assessments are conducted and scored by the school staff.

Applicants MUST obtain the Assessment Guidelines for each program to which they apply. Assessment Guidelines contain specific information about each assessment and any preparation required prior to the assessment.

Applicants who do not attend and complete
the magnet assessment will not be considered for admission.
